In Every Landscape

In every landscape should reside jewels of abstract art waiting to be discovered.
Melissa Brown

These jewels of abstraction were discovered next to my feet in Hawaii.

“"Begin at the beginning,", the King said, very gravely, "and go on till you come to the end: then stop”
Lewis Carroll 1832-1898 (from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland)

I guess this is the end. This stop sign is faded to the point where you have to look at it from just the right angle to read it at all. At least it has the familiar stop sign shape.

The Bottom Line

“Sailing is just the bottom line, like adding up the score in bridge. My real interest is in the tremendous game of life.”
Dennis Conner

Here’s another sailing picture for today. I’m not sure what the score of this bridge game is but I do know one’s gaining on the other. That’s the new span of the Bay Bridge in the back with the current one in front. Hopefully the new bridge will be done by the time the America’s Cup Finals will be held here on San Francisco Bay in 2013.

Wasn't There

“Last night I saw upon the stair
A little man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
Oh, how I wish he'd go away”
Hughes Mearns 1875-1965 (from Antigonish)

The worn steps of the outer wall of Edinburgh Castle

“I cannot see what flowers are at my feet, / Nor what soft incense hangs upon the boughs.
John Keats 1795–1821 (From Ode to a Nightingale)

Valentine's day is over but the heeling remains. These flowers are at the feet of a large Buddha in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

All the Time

“Art happens all the time, everywhere. All we have to do is to keep our minds open.”
Jacek Tylicki

The Ideal

"Stress is related to the environment you live in. As an artist, the ideal is to live in calm, peaceful and intriguing surroundings where earth meets atmosphere."
Lida van Bers

When things get hectic, this is what I place in my brain.

Ahhh, that’s better.

The Shallow Stream

“Time is but the stream I go fishing in. I drink at it, but while I drink I see the sandy bottom and detect how shallow it is. It's thin current slides away, but eternity remains.”
Henry David Thoreau 1817-1862

-A deep thought for today. This is a bucolic scene I photographed in England
a number of Februarys ago.

Dream World

“There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.”
Douglas H. Everett

So last night I had a dream about a tall woman, shallow water and black trees. Anybody know what this means?

Wish List

“May you always walk in sunshine. May you never want for more. May Irish angels rest their wings right beside your door.”
Irish Blessing

New Mexico is a long way from Ireland but this door looked pretty blessed to me.

Parisian Patterns

“Art is the imposing of a pattern on experience,
and our aesthetic enjoyment is recognition of the pattern.”
Alfred North Whitehead 1861-1947

This is a scene with multiple patterns that I found in Paris a few years back.

“On with the dance! Let joy be unconfined”
Lord Byron 1788-1824

This inspiring 40-foot high sculpture is called “Bliss Dance”. It was originally created by Marco Cochrane for Burning Man but now it’s home is on Treasure Island across the bay from San Francisco.
