Caged Fox

"Men have forgotten this truth,' said the fox. 'But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed."

You Are Getting Sleepy

“A democratic civilization will save itself only if it makes the language of the image into a stimulus for critical reflection — not an invitation for hypnosis.”
Umberto Eco

I guess I’m not helping civilization much.

The Shell

“The first man gets the oyster, the second man gets the shell.”
Andrew Carnegie 1835-1919

In this case, the first guy got the Abalone. I found the shell resting on a dry glass birdbath in my friend’s garden.

Big Butt

“I wish my butt did not go sideways, but I guess I have to face that.”
Christie Brinkley

This is not really Christie Brinkley’s butt going sideways. It is part of a forty foot high sculpture called Bliss Dance, originally made for Burning Man. It was created by Marco Cochrane.

Lonely House

“so I wait for you like a lonely house
till you will see me again and live in me.
Till then my windows ache.”
Pablo Neruda, 100 Love Sonnets

This old home, on Highway 1 in Olema Valley, is on land now owned by the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The house is still standing because a rare colony of Thompson’s Big Eared Bats is living in the attic. Pretty romantic, huh?

Goodbye, Mom

“The most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and to let it come in.”
Morrie Schwartz 1916-1995

Helen Prichard 1918-2013

Yesterday my mom passed away in her sleep. I often told her she was the best mom I ever had. And she was. It was a life well lived, full of love.

Mushroom Man

“I am...a mushroom on whom the dew of heaven drops now and then.”
John M. Ford 1957-2006

One fanciful sculpture among many in the garden of Berkeley artist Marcia Donahue.
