Face Space

“Space, and space again, is the infinite deity which surrounds us and in which we are ourselves contained.”
Max Beckmann 1884-1950

A man trapped in Chicago.

Trust

“Simply trust:
Do not the petals flutter down,
Just like this?”
Kobayashi Issa 1763 – 1828

May you always land softly, although not necessarily in a bird bath.

Crack

“I would never do crack...
I would never do a drug named after a part of my own ass, okay?”
Denis Leary

Just cracking a joke. Punny, right? You may now groan in unison.

Nothing's Wrong

"Americans are broad-minded people. They'll accept the fact that a person can be an alcoholic, a dope fiend, a wife beater, and even a newspaperman, but if a man doesn't drive, there is something wrong with him."
Art Buchwald 1925-2007

I think this is the first photo in this blog that wasn’t taken by me. But it is of me. And my wife. I’m driving around Thailand on an elephant. Because that’s what you do when you’re a tourist in Thailand.

Water Is

“Well, Art is Art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now you tell me what you know.”
Groucho Marx 1890-1977

This is the churning water that was made by the propeller of a ferry on San Francisco Bay. My three year old grandson took a look at this and said one word. “Cappuccino”.

Ready Made

"Ready-mades surround us in nature. Beauty, symmetry, and proportion are everywhere, usually pretty close to home."
Jackie Knott

All you need to do is look for them. They're there.

Choice

"I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy."
Dorothy Parker 1893-1967

Bottoms up!

Mystery

“We believe that electricity exists, because the electric company keeps sending us bills for it, but we cannot figure out how it travels inside wires.”
Dave Barry

The Moss Landing Power Plant provides electricity for the folks of Monterey County. It looks like it might be generating a lot of their fog too.

Ticket To Ride

“My own business always bores me to death; I prefer other people's”
Oscar Wilde 1854-1900

You might want to remember this quote if you are ever told to “mind your own business”.
This is a water taxi ticket taker’s table in Thailand. (Say that three times fast.)

No Reason

"There is no reason not to consider the world as one gigantic painting."
Robert Rauschenberg 1925-2008

Or a billion tiny photographs.

Such Things

“People from a planet without flowers would think we must be mad with joy the whole time to have such things about us.”
Iris Murdoch 1919-1999

A peony among the daisies.

Such a Groove

“Mendocino, Mendocino,
Where life's such a groove
You blow your mind in the morning.”
From Mendocino
Doug Sahm 1941-1999

Can you guess where this is? However, no minds were blown during the making this photograph.

In Everything

“There is a power in everything; it is the job of the artist to determine it and express it.”
Mencius 372 BC-289 BC

Flock Together

“Nobody goes there anymore; it's too crowded.”
Yogi Berra

Nobody but the seals and seagulls that is. It’s pupping season for the seals and they love the warm sun.

As Is

“I've been doing a lot of abstract painting lately, extremely abstract. No brush, no paint, no canvas, I just think about it.”
Stephen Wright

I didn't even think about it. It just is. A close-up of a California coastal boulder.
