The New Bridge
“What need the bridge much broader than the flood?”
William Shakespeare 1564-1616
Because of damage done in the 1989 earthquake, what the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge needed was a good seismic retrofit. It turned out that was more efficient to build a new bridge than to retrofit the old one. This is a photo taken two years ago when the new span of the Bay Bridge was being built. The bridge is closed this week-end and will reopen using the new span on Tuesday.

There's so much of symbolism with bridges and in the town where I live we have a big discussion about if they are going to build one more bridge in the middle of the city.
