We who are left how shall we look again
Happily on the sun or feel the rain
Without remembering how they who went
Ungrudgingly and spent
Their lives for us loved, too, the sun and rain?
Wilfred Wilson Gibson 1878-1962
Today is Memorial Day in the United States. I found this flag with a back-lit cross in the field of stars in a window in Hawaii.

In the Depth
In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.
Albert Camus 1913-1960
Summer approaches but when I took this shot last January, it seemed like a misty dream.

Favorite Fiction
“Imagination and fiction make up more than three-quarters of our real life”
Simone Weil 1909-1943
My favorite fiction these days is not a book or movie... it's Photoshop. It makes reality very tweakable. This is a photo of a sculpture in downtown San Jose, California. It looks to be an empty free falling stars and strips aviator suit. I don't know what it's called or who the sculptor is but I like it. I removed it's pedestal with Photoshop to enhance the free falling effect. You can see the pedestal by placing your cursor over the bottom part of the photo. The building in the background is the corporate headquarters of Adobe, the company that makes Photoshop.

Laughing Earth
“Earth laughs in flowers.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson 1803-1882
It’s hard not to be cheered by flowers like these daisies
growing out of a coastal rock crevice.

Not Tired
“Ever charming, ever new, / When will the landscape tire the view?”
John Dyer 1699-1757

Room
“All architecture is shelter, all great architecture is the design of space
that contains, cuddles, exalts, or stimulates the persons in that space.”
Philip Johnson 1906-2005
This is the top of a very tall room… the vertiginous atrium
of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

More Than Smoke
Generally when there's a lot of smoke... there's a just whole lot more smoke.
George Foreman 1949-
There was a stubborn fire beneath all of this smoke in Watsonville, California. The Apple Growers Ice & Cold Storage building burned for three days before the fire was finally extinguished.

Superstitious?
“I busted a mirror and got seven years bad luck, but my lawyer thinks
he can get me five.”
Stephen Wright 1955-
It’s Friday the 13th everyone! Even Blogger is busted. I hope you have
a luckier weekend.

Motion
“Two stars keep not their motion in one sphere.”
William Shakespeare 1564-1616
Two speedboats race along the River Wye which forms part of the border between England and Wales. I like the contrasts in this one- the still river, the speeding boats and the clouds and sky reflected in the water.

The Spectator
“It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors”
Oscar Wilde 1854-1900
I came across the artist Anthony Holdsworth painting this San Francisco scene. The red brick building is St. Patrick’s Church dedicated in 1872 and the modern building behind it is the Marriott “Jukebox” hotel. Mission Street is usually busy with traffic but he synchronized his vision with the traffic lights to make the street seem nearly deserted.

Skylight
“I installed a skylight in my apartment. The people who live above me are furious!”
Steven Wright 1955-
I’m pretty sure nobody is living above the stained glass skylight of the Neiman Marcus Rotunda in San Francisco. But plenty of people are happy to look up from down below. This skylight was originally built for the City of Paris department store in 1906.

By the Sea
“Break, break, break, On thy cold gray stones, O sea! And I would that my tongue could utter The thoughts that arise in me”
Alfred, Lord Tennyson 1809-1892
This view by the sea was taken along beautiful 17 mile Drive in Monterey.

How Sweet
“How sweet it is!”
Jackie Gleason 1916-1987
Sometimes I feel like a kid in a candy store. Especially when I am in a candy store.
