A Wonderful Bird
“A wonderful bird is the pelican,
His bill will hold more than his belican,
He can take in his beak
Enough food for a week
But I'm damned if I see how the helican!”
Dixon Lanier Merritt 1879 – 1972
This guy was a real poser. When I first saw him he was facing me but he slowly turned around showing off his long beak, neck and fine feathers before he flew away.

Nature's Way
“Spring is nature's way of saying, "Let's party!"”
Robin Williams
And so we did- in Mendocino last week.

Anniversary
“We all shine on, like the moon, and the stars, and the sun.”
John Lennon 1940-1980
The crescent shaped pattern in the shadow on the wall of my home was caused by the light from a solar eclipse filtering through the trees.
The woman in this picture is my blushing bride, who I married thirty seven years ago today. She’s my sun and my moon. Happy Anniversary, Dana.
Bonus, at no additional cost to you- If you drag your curser over the photo, the solar eclipse will magically appear in the window!

The Mighty Task
"In Rapturous appeal;
Here nature, free since time began,
Yields to the restless moods of man,
Accepts his bonds of steel."
From The Mighty Task Is Done
Joseph B. Strauss 1870-1938
Here’s another Golden Gate Bridge shot. The guy balancing on a fence post is one of the thousands of tourists who come to admire the beautiful span every year. He was posing so his buddy could take a picture.
Joseph Strauss was the chief engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge. The quote is from a poem he wrote about the building of the bridge. This year is the bridge’s 75th anniversary.

On the Water
"The Bay Area is so beautiful, I hesitate to preach about heaven while I'm here. "
Billy Graham
That’s not the Pearly Gates in the distance- it’s the Golden Gate. The wake was made by the ferry from Sausalito to San Francisco, one of the best rides in the world.

Just Asking
“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.
The important thing is not to stop questioning.”
Albert Einstein 1879-1955
Is this what you would call a work stoppage?

An Occasion for Hope
“The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.”
John Buchan 1875-1940
Is it possible to catch a rainbow? Hope so.

Table Manners
“A few strong instincts and a few plain rules suffice us”
Ralph Waldo Emerson 1803-1882
Evidently the instinct to sit on a table is stronger than the rule against it.

Turn Not Pale
“The further off from England, the nearer is to France /
Then turn not pale, beloved snail, but come and join the dance.”
from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Lewis Carroll 1832-1898
We celebrated my grandson’s third birthday last weekend. After a picnic party in the park he came home where he ran through the sprinkler. He’s laughing because of that snail crawling up his arm. It was a fun day for all.

Once There
“I like empty spaces that are no longer occupied,
although you can tell that people were once there.”
Dick Cole
This quiet fishing pond in Scotland was just a short walk from our B&B.

One Reason
"One reason a dog is such a lovable creature is his tail wags instead of his tongue."
It’s time for a little road rest for this K9 in the Forest of Dean, England.

Finding Beauty
“If one really loves nature, one can find beauty everywhere.”
Vincent van Gogh 1853-1890
But it’s easier if you happen to be in Norway.
